How does a guy who can't dance, can't sing, doesn't play any musical instruments and can barely beat mix become a successful highly paid professional mobile disc jockey? Not by buying the most expensive equipment or by learning how to do the latest dance. He does it by using solid business points that work.
et me tell you right now...I do make a lot of money in this business. I make a six figure income as an event professional. I am more than just a DJ. The point...I am for real. When I say "for real" I mean that I understand the entire spectrum of the business. I also understand that not everyone does large events. Just this year on the same day I had 3 events take place. One event paid $175, the second paid $3000 and the third a whopping $48,000. Yes, those are real numbers. There are big events and there are small ones. The key is to make money on all of them and continue to build your wealth.
If you follow just a small percentage of the points in DJ Money 77 Proven Strategies to make a fortune in the mobile DJ business you will make more money. I often say that great DJs are a dime a dozen. Great DJs who make a lot of money are not. Becoming a highly paid DJ is not always about the love of music and mixing skills. It's about running a business. It's about taking care of the customer. It's about doing it for the money.
My first paying gig was $50 bucks and between then and now I have done events with President Bill Clinton, President George W. Bush, The Doobie Brothers with Michael McDonald, Tony Bennett along with many other national acts and celebrities. I have also done a plethora of weddings, Bar Mitzvahs, Birthday Parties and any other type of celebration you can think of.
Why am I bragging?? Because I want you to know that you can make a fortune in the mobile DJ business. DJ Money is an easy read and all broken down in to 77 simple points.
Here are just a few of the topics covered in the book:
Be more than just a DJ - To make a fortune you have to be more than just a DJ. You have to be a business owner. Someone who understands that often times you are only one show away from bankruptcy. These days, DJs are a dime a dozen. Even good DJs are a dime a dozen. If you buy the latest Mobile DJ song reference list and start playing it, you will be a dime a dozen also. Be more than that.
Control your spending - You can't impulsively spend money without considering the consequences. If you take on too much debt you are just a slave to the business and the stress that follows is a heavy weight to hold on ones shoulders. You must control your spending.
Treat this like a business - not a hobby - Simply put, you must treat this like a business and not as a hobby. While being a DJ requires you to enjoy both people and music - these aspects only represent a fraction of what makes a successful DJ service. The rest of the gig requires you to have a firm grasp on basic business principles. You need to run your business just like the Starbucks shop up the street doing several million dollars a year.
Get paid - I'm always amused with people in this business who say, "wow, I get paid for doing what I love." Well if that is the case, then get paid! You might think that getting paid for your service would be one of the easiest aspects to running a DJ business. Often times it is. However, there are some instances where getting paid can become a waiting game that turns into a hassle.
Buy equipment that will make you money - Here is where many new owners make their mistake. They are so excited about getting into the business that they go out and buy the equipment they want. And quite honestly, end up paying too much. They're not considering the equipment that will make them money.
Learn about all disciplines of the event industry - There are so many talented DJ's across the country, and often the only thing that distinguishes one from another is knowledge. Think about it. They all know how to entertain and engage a crowd. They all stay informed about music trends and the hottest equipment. So what really separates the wheat from the chafe? It is simply that the great ones know things the competition doesn't.
Learn how to price high end events - This is a difficult (and often nerve-wracking) concept for most DJ's to grasp. When quoting your normal run of the mill DJ show you don't want to seem like a sucker and offer a price that is too low. You may also be afraid of chasing the customer away with a huge rate quote. Pricing a high end show is a different animal. Pricing high end shows is a delicate matter, but it is one that becomes easier with time, patience, and supreme confidence.
If you have to think…Then think BIG - You never know when some huge event will land on your lap. So I am of the philosophy that if I have to think I want to think big. Really big. Every great leader knows that if he or she is to be successful they have to think in terms that are bigger than that of what they are. There's that old saying if you shoot for the stars at the very least you land on the moon.
So what is all this valuable information worth?
